Abstract
Purpose : To estimate the prevalence of psychiatric disorder and analyze the factor
related to psychiatric morbidity.
Materials and methods : Forty-seven cancer patients treated with radiotherapy between
Sep. 1997 and Mar. 1998 were enrolled. The study was conducted through interview of
psychiatrist and patient within 7 days after radiotherapy. The diagnosis of psychiatric
disorder was based on Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder(DSM-¥³).
Age ranged from 30-75 years(median: 56). Fourteen patients(29.8%) were male and
33(70.3%) were female. The statistics was used SPSS program and statistical
significance was calculated Chi-square test with 95% confidence interval.
Results : The prevalence of psychiatric disorder observed in cancer patients on
radiation treatment was 44.7%(21 patients). The categories of prevalent psychiatric
disorder were disorders related to depression in 76.2%(16 patients). related to adjustment
in 66.7%(14 patients) and related to anxiety in 42.9%(9 patients). In analysis of factor
related to prevalence of psychiatric disorder, there was statistical significance in
frequency of recurrence or metastasis(no vs 1-2 times)(p=0.011), expectation of treatment
outcome(curative vs palliative)(p=0.054) and duration of illness(less than 6 months vs
more than 6 months)(p=0.062).
Conclusion : We concluded all oncologist must always keep in mind that cancer
patients might contain psychiatric disorders of 44.7% or more.
